La Arboleda de Macanaz
La Arboleda de Macanaz was a riverbank grove situated on the left bank of the River Ebro near the Puente de Santiago bridge. Access was via the old walkway.
Here, the people of Zaragoza used to celebrate the Cincomarzada festival and rafters travelling to the sawmills of Arrabal also used to stop here.
The construction of the Puente de Santiago bridge had a significant impact on about a quarter of the grove, and the landscaping that followed left the natural grove with just a line of trees by the riverside and outside the park’s perimeter fence.
With a total area of 35,000 m2, the park features boules areas, a playground, fountains and viewpoints. It’s a small and quiet park where you can admire the riverside vegetation, and recreational and cultural events are sometimes held here.
But most of all, La Arboleda de Macanaz is a large terrace where you can enjoy a different view of El Pilar or the River Ebro.
History tells us that under the park, in an old salt mine, lie the bodies of ten thousand victims of the typhoid epidemic, bombing victims, or victims of the second siege on the city by French troops in 1809.
There is currently no sculpture, monument or inscription in the park to mark this historical fact, and there is no shortage of people and associations who think that the people who bravely defended Zaragoza deserve our admiration and recognition. Come and pay a visit to this large terrace, appreciate its history, and enjoy a different view of El Pilar and the River Ebro.
